Well, since this trip took us six hours - which based on the literature is quite respectable (except that the friends we stayed with did it in 3.5 hours the night before!)- it deserves considerable explanation. This was a date, I guess you could call it, as we left the kids behind. I guess most people don't look at a 750 m vertical, 17+ km trek as a date, but it was time without the kids and more time than we've had in a while, so that's what I'll call it! Let's start with the initial warnings, note that this is an active volcanic region containing one volcano, Ngauruhoe (behind me) that erupted last in 1975 and quite close to Ruapehu that erupted in 1995 (see July 13,2007 and Sept 27, 2006 for that one).

Easter weekend - Tongariro Crossing!
