From Wellington back home...

So after a very rough (and very sick) three hour ferry across the strait, we headed up through Wanaka then across to Ruapehu to do some skiing! Skiing on a volcano is a bit different from the Rockies!! Very narrow runs with rocks of scoria on both sides rather than the nice comfortable trees to run into!! Right at my head in the picture you can see the crater lake. This volcano did erupt in 1995 and only disturbed the skiing for a couple weeks. Luckily the slopes had just closed on eruption, so instead of skiing quickly down, many people apparently stopped to take pictures! After our ski trip headed to the Waitomo caves (and stayed in that great hostel we'd found with Shane's parents, with amazing pizza), then off to Hamilton where we returned the rental for our own van and back to Auckland.
